Beech Grove City Government

Beech Grove is a third class city, a designation based on population. In Indiana, municipalities with populations of less than 35,000 are classified as third class cities. Beech Grove's population is 14,492 according to 2020 Census data.

City officials elected by the voters are the Mayor, Clerk-Treasurer, members of the Common Council, and City Judge. The city government of Beech Grove is organized under four branches – the executive (mayor), legislative (council), fiscal (clerk-treasurer), and statutory boards and commissions.

The Common Council consists of seven members, with two at-large seats and five elected from districts.

City Ordinances provide for other city officials, including the Building Commissioner, City Attorney, City Engineer, EMS Director, Police Chief, Street Commissioner, Superintendent of Sanitation, and Council President Pro Tempore.

The city has established a number of executive departments to perform administration functions. By ordinance, these departments are Police, Law, Parks and Recreation, and Sanitation. Also established are an Ordinance Violations Bureau, City Court and Department of Compliance. The Board of Public Works and Safety is designated as the Purchasing Agency for the City.

Boards and commissions established by ordinance are the Board of Parks and Recreation, Board of Public Works and Safety, Board of Sanitation, Board of Zoning Appeals, Cablevision Authority, Economic Development Commission, Redevelopment Commission, Greenscape Commission, Public Safety Committee, and Youth Advisory Board.
