Trash & Recycling

The city has implemented a four-day-a-week trash pickup system (Tuesdays through Fridays) that will allow for important, routine scheduled maintenance on the vehicles. Your trash will continue to be picked up on most holidays, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. See the 2024 Holiday Trash Collection Schedule for details.

The City of Beech Grove also provides curbside recycling in our city. This service includes municipal buildings, city parks, special events and residents who live in single or double family dwellings. This is a FREE service to you and we encourage your participation. Please call 803-9111, 803-9098 or 803-9120 to sign up, or you may notify us at compliance@beechgrove.com. A 96 gallon container will be delivered to your residence along with instructions as listed below. Recycling will be picked up wherever totes are currently being placed for trash pickup. If a resident's trash pickup is in the alley, then they will be expected to place their recycling tote in the alley as well. We look forward to hearing from you on this important environmental matter.

Stormwater Utility

The City is responsible for providing stormwater management facilities and services, including installation and maintenance of storm sewers, inlets and ditches, as well as ensuring that erosion and sediment controls are provided on construction sites to protect waterways.

Historically, the allocation of funds has not been sufficient to address all of the City's stormwater management needs.  Although the City has done a good job providing stormwater services on a limited budget, the number of drainage projects has grown and maintenance activities have been cut back at times due to a lack of resources.

Funding is not provided by the federal or state government for these services, so the City must establish a funding source.  Stormwater user fees will be billed and collected by the Utility on a monthly basis from properties in the City of Beech Grove.  The revenue generated from the stormwater user fees can be used City-wide to improve the City in the following ways:

Fund storm sewer maintenance and drainage improvement projects.

Provide maintenance of the existing storm sewer collection system.

Fund the federally mandated NPDES Phase II Stormwater Permit Program (commonly referred to as the “MS4 Program”).

Minimize off-site sediment from construction sites.

Provide education on water quality.

Fund routine testing and monitoring of water quality.

Repair ditch banks to provide stabilization.

Reduce sediment into our waterways.

FAQs

Who do I call if my sanitary sewer backs up into my home or busines?

In the unfortunate event of a sanitary sewer backup into your home or on your property, please contact Citizens Energy Group at (317) 924-3311. This service is available 24/7/365.

Sanitary sewers can cause a backup into your home or property when blocked. If you believe a public sanitary sewer is blocked, a CEG crew will be dispatched to evaluate the condition of the public sewer main at no cost to residents. However, CEG will not evaluate your private service line.

CEG crews are not allowed to spend public resources, such as equipment and labor, to pump out basements or help residents clean up private property.

Although CEG crews perform routine and periodic maintenance, blockages can still occur. Most sewer blockages are the result of people putting grease, trash, or other inappropriate materials down the sewer lines or manholes.

Does the city pick up mattresses?

Yes. We will collect mattresses and box springs on your normal trash day. There is a $25.00 charge for each piece that is out for collection. You must notify DPW by calling (317) 803-9098 if you would like to be put on the list for pickup and all charges pursuant to collection of these items will be added to your monthly sewer bill.
